The Department of Social Work was founded in 1985 in response to Botswana’s urgent need for social workers to address the complex personal and social problems that emanate from the country’s rapid social, economic and cultural changes. The Department’s approach to human welfare derives from an understanding that difficulties that confront individuals, families, and groups are often caused by deficiencies and conflicts in communities, organizations, and other social institutions. Therefore, its courses are taught mainly from community and social development paradigms that underscore the need to transform communities, organizations, and social institutions into sites of individual and group empowerment
