About Us

The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Botswana was founded on the 1st of June 2007and is dedicated to the education and training of robust health workers and practitioners for Botswana, the region and the world. We offer professional degrees in Nursing, Laboratory Medical Sciences and Environmental Health.
The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Botswana will be the premier centre for health human resources development in Africa, forging ahead in innovative education, research and service.
The Faculty of Health Sciences exists to develop well-rounded competent front-line primary health care practitioners, specialized health experts and lead scientists. The Faculty of Health Sciences strives to influence policy and spearhead scientific innovations in Botswana and beyond, through the use of leading technology, research and partnerships. The faculty will encourage lifelong learning in the student who is our primary customer.
Faculty structure
The Faculty has over 500 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled invarious programmes.Approximately 100 students graduate each year.The Faculty comprises of:
  • School of Allied Health Professions
  • School of Nursing
  • School of Public Health
Research activities
The Faculty of Health Sciences has skilled and competent staff engaged in various research activities on the major health challenges in Botswana. The Centre for HIV/AIDS studies is mainly involved in research on HIV/AIDS while other ongoing researches include malaria study, non-communicable disease and human heredity and diseases. Faculty of Health Sciences staff is collaborating with other institutions in the country (e.g. NACA, Ministry of Health) and external institutions in collaborative research. The shared laboratory space in the new Faculty of Health Sciences will offer opportunity to staff to engage in high-tech research in genomics.
Faculty of Health Sciences has productive linkages with well-established universities world-wide. The Faculty is collaborating with University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), Baylor College of Medicine(Houston), Harvard School of Public Health(Boston), Meharry Medical College, University of Washington, (Seattle), Howard University (Washington, DC), University of Michigan ( Ann Arbor),Perdana University (Malaysia), Split University (Croatia), Auvergne (France), Ghent University (Belgium), Blekinge Institute of Technology and Jonkoping University (Sweden) and universities in South Africa, Zimbabwe and the Caribbean. The collaborations in research and teaching bring a diversity that enhances the Faculty of Health Sciences’ international recognition.
